Woodlawn Cemetery

Bronx, NY

The Woolworth Memorial Chapel at Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx was designed by Robertson “Happy” Ward in the Colonial Revival style. Constructed in 1935, the Chapel is a contributing building to Woodlawn Cemetery’s status as a National Historic Landmark, a 400-acre non-sectarian cemetery which is among the nation’s most distinguished burial grounds.

Li/Saltzman Architects is the Preservation Architect for the renovation of the Woolworth Chapel which is used for community programs as well as private services. Working closely with the Woodlawn Conservancy, LSA and its team, including MKW as the Landscape Architect and Tangel Engineering as the Mechanical Engineer, developed a program to provide universal accessibility while respecting the historic character of the Chapel and its site.  The project includes landscaping, an ADA compliant parking area, barrier-free accessibility to the Chapel, new ADA compliant toilet rooms, upgrades to the building envelope and systems and historically appropriate lighting and finishes.

LSA also serves as a consultant to the Woodlawn Conservancy for issues related to the architecture of the National Historic Landmark.  An interior renovation to a modern mausoleum was completed in 2024.
