Designed by sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, the Statue of Liberty was dedicated on October 28, 1886. Less than 40 year later, Fort Wood, including the Statue, was designated a National Monument. Liberty Island is an individually designated NYC landmark, is listed on the New Jersey, New York and National Registers of Historic Places, and is a designated a World Heritage Site.

As part of a team led by FXCollaborative, LSA served as preservation consultant for a new museum on Liberty Island. LSA’s scope included identifying character-defining features and spatial relationships; evaluating potential impacts; guiding the team in meeting The Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties; and assisting in the preparation of the final written evaluation of and appropriateness arguments for, the selected scheme. LSA also assisted in consultations with and presentations to the New York and New Jersey Historic Preservation Offices. The Museum opened to the public in May 2019.
