St. Luke’s School

New York, NY

St. Luke’s School, located at 487 Hudson Street in the Greenwich Village Historic District, was designed by Thomas M. Bell and built in the early 1950s with an addition designed by Barry Rice built in 2012. Today, the co-educational elementary and middle school is several years into a multi-phased expansion project.

Li/Saltzman Architects served as the Historic Preservation Consultant to Marble Fairbanks during the construction of a rooftop garden and play deck above the 2012 rooftop addition. Re-programming the roof deck required relocating existing HVAC equipment, extending the exterior stairs to provide egress, and installing an arched, open mesh play cage on the upper roof. LSA provided archival research, performed design review and assisted the project team in making presentations to and liaising with preservation advocacy groups and regulatory agencies.

The design was approved by the Landmarks Preservation Commission and construction was completed in 2023.
