St. Charles Borromeo Church
Brooklyn, NY
St. Charles Borromeo Church is an 1869 Gothic Revival style building designed by Patrick C. Keely, a prolific church architect. Located in the Brooklyn Heights Historic District, the church features red Philadelphia brick, stone trim, a gabled slate roof, and leaded and stained glass windows. Over time, numerous historic features had been painted or covered with non-original materials, diminishing the church’s historic character.
As the Preservation Architect for the church, Li · Saltzman focused on restoring the historic integrity - developing a comprehensive program for exterior restoration and interior renovation. The exterior restoration removed asbestos-based paints, provided a weather-tight envelope, brought back character-defining features and finishes, and provided the stained glass windows with protective glazing. The phased interior work will provide expanded restrooms and meeting rooms and restore the church’s main sanctuary space.
