Sing Sing Prison Museum

Ossining, NY

The idea of a historic site and interpretive center at the Sing Sing Correctional Facility began decades ago. Working in conjunction with exhibit designers and historians, Li/Saltzman Architects prepared a Concept Design in 2000.  Utilizing the original 1825 cell block constructed by the prisoners and a 1930 Art Deco powerhouse, the interpretive design offered a window into the history of incarceration and reform in the United States; and how central this history is to the understanding of our culture. A chronological organization was utilized, spanning the colonial era until the present day. The stabilization of the historic cellblock, the adaptive use of the powerhouse, archaeology, and issues of security and safety, were thoughtfully incorporated as part of the overall concept design.

After the facility was determined eligible for listing on the New York State and National Registers of Historic Places in 2015, the Sing Sing Prison Museum prepared a National Register Nomination. LSA prepared architectural narrative descriptions of contributing and potentially contributing resources for inclusion in the Nomination. The Sing Sing Prison Museum is currently under development.
