The Orangerie, Pocantico Center
Tarrytown, NY
The Pocantico Center, a National Historic Landmark and a National Trust Historic Site, comprises a unique collection of historic buildings, including the Orangerie, on 286 acres of landscaped grounds. The Orangerie, designed by architect William Welles Bosworth in 1907, is a rectilinear pavilion modeled after the Orangerie at the Palace of Versailles. It features monumental, arched multi-light windows and monumental doors, accessing an open, sky-lit hall. The stucco-clad building, vacant for many years, originally provided shelter for the estate’s 200-year-old orange tree collection.
The project for the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, in partnership with the National Trust for Historic Preservation, is the restoration and adaptive use of the historic Orangerie as a multi-use facility for performance events, exhibition space, and meetings. Working with FXCollaborative, Li · Saltzman Architects serves as the historic preservation consultant. The restorative work will renew the integrity of Bosworth’s elegant Beaux-Arts design while providing a new publicly-accessible use for the historic Orangerie.
