Old Westbury Gardens is the former home of John S. Phipps (1874-1958), his wife Margarita Grace Phipps (1876-1957), and their children. The main house and gardens, completed in 1906, were designed by George A. Crowley, with the assistance of Grosvenor Atterbury. In 1911, Horace Trumbauer added a 2-story Service Wing extending east from the original house with areas for food preparation, serving and storage, a silver vault, linen closets, and staff housing. The property, which was converted to a Museum that opened to the public in 1960, is listed on the New York State and National Registers of Historic Places.

As part of a pilot program to restore and interpret the Service Wing, LSA worked with a multi-disciplinary team to assess interior spaces, features, finishes, and equipment; and prepared a report with treatment recommendations. The pilot program's goal will be to accurately portray the Service Wing so that Museum visitors can experience a “behind the scenes” glimpse of the complex service work necessary to keep the house and property functioning. Components of the Service Wing include service workers’ sleeping quarters; communication systems; cooking and refrigeration equipment; and storage for dinnerware, linen, silver, and wine.
