Headquarters of the National Society of the Colonial Dames in the State of New York

New York, NY

Constructed in 1930, the Headquarters of the National Society of Colonial Dames in the State of New York (NSCDSNY), located at 215 East 71st Street in Manhattan, is a four-story brick, limestone, and cast stone building executed in the Colonial Revival style to the designs of noted Architect Richard Henry Dana, Jr. The building’s unique design, a combination of historically correct detailing and authentic 18th century building fabric, was intended to be of didactic value for students and historians of 18th century life. The building was designated as an individual landmark by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission in 2019.

LSA served as the Preservation Architect for the exterior restoration of the building which included the repair of the masonry facades; replacement of cast stone balustrades in-kind; the refurbishment of wood doors, windows, and shutters; slate mansard roof replacement; the replacement of copper dormer roofing; the installation of new cold fluid-applied roofing; and ironwork repairs. LSA is also assisting the Society with an interior rehabilitation of the building which addresses modern programming and code requirements for educational initiatives, public assembly, and barrier-free access.
