Mets-Willets Point Station
Queens, NY
The Long Island Railroad proposed to construct a modernized station at Mets-Willets, making the station complex fully compliant with American Disabilities Act (“ADA”) accessibility requirements; enhancing safety and security; and improving infrastructure resiliency. The project site is surrounded by the Flushing Meadows-Corona Park, encompassing the site of the 1939-40 and 1964-65 World’s Fairs. In the late 1960s the park was designed according to a formal plan, with streets, walkways, recreational facilities, as well as notable historic resources.
Li/Saltzman Architects served as Historic Preservation Consultant to STV for the preparation of an Urban Design and Visual Resources Statement for Flushing Meadows - Corona Park. LSA researched park history and historic resources and performed a visual survey and analysis of the site’s context and unique character including remnants of the 1939-1940 and 1964-1965 New York’s World’s Fairs along with buildings and structures associated with the redevelopment of the park. LSA prepared a draft National Register nomination for the Flushing Meadows-Corona Park Historic District. The proposed historic district was to include four State Register listed structures, dozens of contributing structures including buildings, bridges, fountains, pavilions, lakes, landscape features and sculptures.
