Lincoln Correctional Facility
New York, NY
The former Young Women’s Hebrew Association was built in 1914 as a residential and educational space for young Jewish immigrant women. During World War II, the building was used as a rest center for African American soldiers. In the 1940s and 1950s, it served as a school, and was subsequently repurposed as a correctional facility from 1976 until 2019.
Li · Saltzman Architects was retained by Empire State Development to perform code, building, and property analysis as part of an effort to envision possible adaptive uses for the vacated space. A charrette was designed for a residential option with a contextual neighborhood design (quality housing). A second charrette was designed to use the existing building as a community facility.
