When the Kings Highway branch of the Brooklyn Public Library opened in 1954, it was the first branch library in Brooklyn built by the City of New York. Today the branch is known for its extensive research collection and nationally-recognized Service to the Aging program.
Li · Saltzman Architects provided full architectural services for the complete exterior, interior renovation, and addition for the 16,000 square-foot structure. Establishing a beacon at the building’s corner to welcome long-term patrons and newcomers to this valued community facility, Li · Saltzman Architect’s addition utilizes a contemporary glass and aluminum curtain wall. New signage and landscaping enliven the library entrance, and a new elevator provides ADA-compliant access. The interior renovation includes reading rooms, computer rooms, meeting rooms, a multi-purpose room with stage, offices, staff work rooms, and restrooms; new mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection systems, and a structural system upgrade. New and existing elements are carefully integrated into a vibrant composition.
