Philip Johnson Brick House
New Canaan, CT
The Brick House is one of the original structures at Philip Johnson's Glass House Historic Site, a National Historic Landmark, administered by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The Brick House was designed by Johnson in conjunction with the Glass House between 1945 and 1948 (completed 1949). The two buildings, situated on a bi-axial plan with a landscaped courtyard, were conceived as one design, the solidity of the Brick House serving as a counterpoint to the transparency of the Glass House. Together they form one of the most significant examples of American mid-century Modern architecture. Li · Saltzman Architects led an interdisciplinary team including landscape architects, engineers, and conservators in the assessment of the existing conditions of the Brick House. The team’s Preservation Planning Report proposed exterior and interior treatment recommendations, new mechanical systems, site drainage improvements, landscape restoration, and conservation of the interior finishes, furniture, and book collections, with a focus on sustainable design solutions.
