Highbridge Park
New York, NY
With the 2015 restoration of the High Bridge serving as the impetus, New York City pledged approximately $30 million for the restoration and improvement of architectural and landscape resources within Highbridge Park to better serve the surrounding community. Working with MKW Landscape Architects, Li/Saltzman Architects served as the Preservation Architect for the preparation of the Highbridge Park Master Plan which included the restoration of the Highbridge Park Grand Stair, a three-tiered schist, granite, and concrete staircase executed in the Beaux-Arts style which connects Laurel Hill Terrace to a pathway within Highbridge Park below. The scope of work included structural stabilization, masonry restoration, paint removal, fabrication of new granite cheek wall coping units, replacement of damaged concrete landings, installation of new light fixtures at historic locations, and the addition of handrails to comply with current building codes. On completion, the historic and aesthetic integrity of the Highbridge Park Grand Stair will be restored and this long closed historic resource returned to public use.
