Henry Street Settlement
New York, NY
The three original Federal style rowhouses of 263, 265, and 267 Henry Street are occupied by the Henry Street Settlement, a not-for-profit organization. Founder Lillian Wald started working in 265 Henry Street in 1895; over time HSS expanded to 263 and 267. The linked buildings are a National Historic Landmark, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and individual New York City Historic Landmarks.
LSA was the Architect for the exterior restoration and partial interior renovation of 263, 265, and 267 Henry Street, utilizing an Environmental Protection Fund (EPF) grant administered through the State Historic Preservation Office. The exterior restoration of the front and side facades entailed brick, stone, wood doors, leaded glass sidelights. The restoration of the iron fences, gates, stair newels and railings involved the casting of new ornamental metals to match the historic, funded in part by the New York Landmarks Conservancy and the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission. The interior restoration/renovation work focused on executive offices, hallways, and stairs, including the installation of a new interior stair at 263 Henry Street and the reinforcement and restoration of the historic interior stairs at 265 and 267 Henry Street. LSA worked with exhibit designers to develop a ground floor permanent installation open to the public on the history of the Henry Street Settlement.
