Grand Central Terminal - Vanderbilt Hall

Grand Central Terminal, designed by architects Reed & Stem and Warren & Wetmore, is a Beaux-Arts style railroad terminal built between 1903 and 1913. The Terminal is both an individual and an interior New York City landmark, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and is a National Historic Landmark. In order to simplify pedestrian patterns between the Terminal and the Interborough Rapid Transit (IRT) subway, the New York City Transit Authority (NYCTA) sought architectural and engineering services to create a new stair access in the 42nd Street Passage.
Li · Saltzman Architects served as historic preservation consultants to STV Inc. on the design of the new access stair, which is subject to Section 106 Review by the New York State Historic Preservation Office (NY-SHPO). LSA’s scope included performing historic research, analyzing the impact of proposed design schemes on historic fabric, and providing recommendations for mitigation and for treatment of historic fabric affected by the new design.
