Delacorte Public Restroom

New York, NY

Located in Central Park, a National Historic Landmark and a New York City Scenic Landmark, the Delacorte Public Restroom was constructed in 1912. The granite, schist, and limestone building, designed in the Collegiate Gothic Style, was in need of a major restoration. The building serves the adjacent Delacorte Theater, which is undergoing a major revitalization by Ennead Architects for The Public Theater and the Central Park Conservancy.

Li/Saltzman Architects, as the preservation architect, provided archival research, assessed the exterior envelope, and established a scope of restorative work to return the building to sound condition, restore its historic integrity, and meet LPC regulatory requirements. The restorative scope included facade cleaning with Rotec micro-abrasive system; re-creation of missing original limestone window enframements and gable finials; repointing and selective repairs of masonry; new windows and doors recalling the historic configuration and detail; new copper gutters, internal leaders, and flashing; slate roof replacement; and new light fixtures based on the original design. The project is scheduled for completion in the fall of 2025.
