Brooklyn Bridge

Brooklyn and Manhattan, NY

The Brooklyn Bridge, designed by Engineer John A. Roebling and constructed between1869 and 1883, has become an internationally iconic structure and an architectural symbol of New York City. NYC’s Department of Transportation undertook a major Rehabilitation of the Brooklyn Bridge Approach Arches, Towers, Ramp Substructures, and Miscellaneous Repairs. LSA served as the Preservation Architecture Consultant to GPI, the Resident Engineer, from 2019 to 2025.

Given the historic and architectural significance of the Brooklyn Bridge, LSA worked with the project team to ensure the highest preservation standards. LSA meticulously compared proposed interventions with archival photographs and drawings to develop appropriate treatments and detailing, while simultaneously addressing modern programmatic requirements, e.g., seismic and security concerns.  LSA’s role included archival research; reviewing construction documents, technical shop drawings, samples, and mock-ups; and developing and performing on-site quality review of restoration and rehabilitation work.  The project is receiving a 2025 Lucy G. Moses’ Preservation Award from the New York Landmarks Conservancy.
