Bayonne Bridge
Staten Island, NY - Bayonne, NJ
The Bayonne Bridge, designed by Othmar Ammann and Cass Gilbert, was completed in 1931 as the world’s longest arch span. The Bridge serves as a gateway to the Port of New York and New Jersey. The Bridge has been determined eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places, and the New York and New Jersey State Registers.
In order to allow modern containerships to access terminals after the expansion of the Panama Canal in 2014, the Bridge’s deck needed to be raised to a height of 215 feet above mean high water. Li · Saltzman Architects and archaeologists at Historical Perspectives, Inc., served as Historic Preservation Consultants to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey for Section 106 Review. LSA’s work involved archival research, field survey, preparation of design review presentations to the Port Authority and Consulting Parties, and assistance in the preparation of a site-specific Programmatic Agreement for mitigating effects to historic resources.
