Battery Coastal Resilience

New York, NY

The Battery is a 25 acre public park located at the iconic southern tip of Manhattan Island, largely created by successive landfill and expansion campaigns between 1788 until the 1950s. Battery Park features several designated historic resources, including Castle Clinton (1801-1811), a National Monument that is listed on the New York State (SR) and National Registers (NR) of Historic Places, and is a designated New York City landmark; as well as Pier A (1884-1886), which is SR/NR listed, and is a designated New York City landmark.

The New York City Economic Development Corporation is undertaking the Lower Manhattan Coastal Resiliency program of which the Battery Coastal Resilience project is a critical link. LSA served as Historic Preservation Consultant to Stantec for the design of a new elevated and reinforced wharf, as well as landscape improvements, all located along the border between Pier A and the Battery. LSA assists the project team in meeting the requirements of the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation and the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission; assessing potential effects to historic above-ground resources; seeking ways to reduce potential adverse impacts to the historic fabric; and working with the project team to salvage historic and artistic fabric for re-use.
