Baisley Park Community Center
Queens, NY
Baisley Park Houses is a 377-unit, 7.48 acre apartment complex, built in 1961 by the New York City Housing Authority. Housing a population of approximately 930 persons within five residential towers, the residents were in dire need of a community center.
Working closely with representatives of the tenants association, Li · Saltzman Architects developed a program for 8,400 square feet of space, accommodating children’s after-school programs, adult career training, and community meetings and events, with provisions for barrier-free access, new mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems, and a new elevator. Establishing a highly visible glass and stainless steel entrance, the design of the new community center incorporated vibrant color schemes and low-maintenance materials and fixtures. The new center provides a welcoming and dynamic space for community activities.
