Abrons Arts Center
New York, NY
The Henry Street Settlement (HSS), which has been serving residents of the Lower East Side since 1893, developed the Abrons Arts Center as one of the nation’s first arts centers to serve a predominantly low-income population. The Arts Center is composed of two distinct components – a three-story red brick structure, constructed in 1975 housing an indoor 150-seat theater, 99-seat recital hall, gallery spaces, workshops, classrooms, and offices, with an exterior amphitheater, connected to a landmark playhouse.
LSA is the Architect for the interior and exterior renovation and expansion of the1975 Brutalist-style structure. The project encompasses the expansion of gallery and flex space through the use of energy-efficient curtain walls; barrier-free access through the addition of a LULA elevator and ramps; the addition of accessible restrooms; masonry and concrete restoration of the façade and amphitheater; new mechanical systems; and improved acoustics, lighting, and audio-visual systems. The project is schedule to be completed in 2025.
