107th Street Pier and Bobby Wagner Walk
New York, NY
The 107th Street Pier and Bobby Wagner Walk are located in the East Harlem section of the East River Esplanade (ESP), a park which runs along the eastern waterfront of Manhattan. Originally the site of a municipal dump, the 107th Street Pier was converted to an open recreation pier in the 1930s and was rehabilitated by architect Giorgio Cavaglieri and artist Andrea Blum in 1991 (see left image). The pier was closed to the public in 2018 due to structural instability. Bobby Wagner Walk and the East River Bulkhead are also severely deteriorated.
The NYC Economic Development Corporation is undertaking an effort to renew the East Harlem section of the ESP. LSA serves as the Historic Preservation Consultant to Stantec for the redesign of the Bobby Wagner Walk including a new 107th Street Pier and rehabilitation of the East River Bulkhead. LSA provided archival research and assessment of the potential effects on the area’s historic resources; and assisted the project team in meeting the requirements of the NY State Historic Preservation Office. When complete, the project will revitalize public use of the waterfront walk and provide access to the new East 107th Street Pier.
